How to be a host

Seedling

Before you start...

If you can demonstrate a commitment to organic growing and sustainable living, and agree to the Host Commitment you can become a WWOOF Ireland Host.

You must be prepared to welcome WWOOFers into your home and provide them with clean, warm, dry accommodation and nourishing food.

You must be prepared to share your knowledge and experience and to work alongside them when necessary.

What to do...

  1. Click 'Create new account' and enter a username and email address.
  2. You will receive a welcome e-mail message. Click the link in the message and set up a password only you will know.
  3. To become a host you must agree to the Host Commitment and pay an annual subscription of €30, by PayPal or by post
  4. When you have paid, you must write some information about your site and upload a picture if you have one.
  5. Your site details have to be approved by the WWOOF Ireland Team, this may take about a week, and until they are, you cannot be contacted by WWOOFers, or put up a notice on the noticeboard.
  6. Once approved, your site will then appear in the 'List of Hosts'. New hosts are also listed in the menu on the left of the page.
  7. WWOOFers who are interested in a placement with you will then be able to contact you from your page. Their message will include an automatic link to their profile page. You can choose who to offer a place to. Your e-mail address is not revealed until you reply.
  8. At busy times, you may receive many requests. Please always reply to WWOOFers, even if only to say 'Sorry, no places'. You can set up a Google Calendar to show when you have places free - it takes a little time but helps to keep track of bookings and may reduce requests when you are already full.
  9. If you offer a place, tell WWOOFers what to expect, especially in terms of work, hours and accommodation and answer any questions they may have. It is best to confirm dates and other arrangements as soon as you can and again at least a week before placements begin.
  10. WWOOF volunteers are advised to have insurance and a specially designed policy is available for them. You are advised to make it clear if you insist on insurance and to check details before confirming placements. You should also check your own insurance - some household policies will cover volunteers but larger farms may have to pay an extra premium. We do not offer an insurance policy for hosts.
