Hosts in Ulster...

County: Antrim

PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT US AT PRESENT> WE ARE NOT TAKING ANY BOOKINGS NOW> Hill farm (cattle and sheep) and fishing on small off-shore island. Wild life for the hardy and at the mercies of the weather. We're still tucked up for the winter and don't want disturbing until spring shoots start sprouting - say March. if we need anyone sooner - we'll put out a shout.

Sorry we are not taking bookings for 2012 at present. Ballylagan Organic Farm in County Antrim was one of the pioneering organic farms in Northern Ireland. Today, with 100 acres, the business is still expanding and we currently produce beef, pork, chicken, duck, eggs and vegetables for sale through our farm shop. We are looking for individuals or groups of wwoofers [up to three in Spring/Summer and two the rest of the year] who are keen to experience a diverse farming life. New ideas and enthusiasm will go a long way! Modern, hostel style accommodation is adjacent to the farm house with all mod cons including internet connection, television as well as kitchen, shower room and lounge area. Much of what you eat will have been produced on the farm. We have a couple of bicycles for ventures into the nearby towns and villages. For longer journeys, public transport is available to Belfast, along the Antrim Coast and further afield. Tasks will involve weeding, fruit and veg picking, routine animal management and general farm maintenance. This is a perfect opportunity for those wanting a place to stay and work with a view to further exploring Ireland.

County: Cavan
Image uploaded by user Lakeview Gardens and Organic Farm

Lakeview Gardens & Organic Farm are situated on the Cavan Meath border overlooking and around Mullagh Lake. The gardens are extensive, occasionally open to the public and provide flowers, fruit and vegetables all year round. Lakeview Farm has been farmed to organic standards since 1996 and we we strive to be as sustainable and self sufficient as possible with the environment and wildlife an important consideration. 60 hectares are in grassland and this supports a suckler herd which is predominantly Aberdeen Angus. There are also farmyard animals including pigs, horses and many types of poultry. 20 hectares of the farm are in commercial forestry, predominantly broadleaf, and there are paths throughout which are a great amenity with a hide by the lake edge for watching wildlife. Field boundaries are predominantly stone walls; traditional cleft larch fencing is also used in key locations. The village of Mullagh is nearby and there are regular buses to Dublin and elsewhere nearby. This is a beautiful place with lots of activity and opportunities! We are a small community of Buddhist running a centre in a beautifully restored Victorian country house. The old walled garden of the property is used for growing vegetables and fruit. A qualified horticulturalist is in charge of the garden and available to advice and direct. We have ten acres of grounds, meadow and a lovely old woodland bordering onto a lake. We need volunteers to help in the vegetable area and in the woodland. Accommodation is comfortable and in the restored outbuildings of the property. The atmosphere at the centre is very friendly and relaxed and people are made very welcome. They can join in our daily Buddhist practises and meditation or not, there is no obligation. We serve vegetarian food, and there is an area for smoking outside, but alcohol and drugs, except for medication are not permitted. A small group of people live at the centre as residents. The village of Bawnboy is two kilometres away with one shop and two pubs! This a very unspoilt area of Ireland, and is where the Shannon river rises. The centre is in the Marble Arch Geo Park, which offers spectacular views and is an ideal area for hill walking.

We are six miles from the Northern Ireland border - 20 miles from Enniskillen. Glean na sidh, the vally of the fairies. We have a small farm, we keep horses, a donkey which we are training to pull a cart, we have chickens, guinea fowl, ducks, an organic herb and vegetable garden, three kids, two adults (one English, one Italian.) we try to be as self sufficient as possible. Isabella is a reflexologist, massage therapist and angel practioneer. Andy is a gardener and he does all sorts of odd jobs. We love music and play instruments and we have a great interest in spirituality. The household is vegetarian. We need assistance with the gardens, animals, outbuilding upkeep and maintenance work. Please contact us by phone. We rarely get to a computer and our small holding is in a dip in hills so that internet connection is not easy. If you ring and give us your number we will ring you back to discuss booking.

County: Donegal

We have a smallholding of roughly five acres with the same again rented. We keep rare breed free range pigs, horses, goats chickens and ducks. We also plant our own vegetables. We began our smallholding four years ago and are expanding every year trying to add more rare breed animals to our wee farm. Our smallholding is located in the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) area with the Derryveagh mountains on one side of us and the atlantic ocean on the other, the area is very beautiful and there are many opportunities to hear Irish traditional music with regular music sessions. We usually expect our volunteers to help us for about five hours a day, you will be provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner, evenings and weekends are free We do not cater for vegetarians or people with specific dietary needs as we raise our own animals for the table. While it might sound obvious, if you have any back/health problems or don't like cold/wet/mucky conditions then think again about coming to the North West, it is the most beautiful place on earth (we're biased) but it can be harsh sometimes,

We are two artists living on twenty acres of mountain pasture and bogland at the foot of Errigal. After a long period of neglect due to other interests, we are gradually returning to a more intensive interest in self sufficiency and sustainability. We have half of our land planted in maturing trees and there is ongoing tree planting and harvesting for fuel and construction work. We want to bring back our old vegetable and fruit garden to full cultivation from it's present state of wilderness and neglect . Also we have plans to return to keeping more livestock such as goats and large poultry. At present we keep chickens for eggs and also some fancy birds for their looks . Other plans include building a tree house , making the field boundaries stock proof again with fencing , hedging and dry stone walling and generally making preparations for keeping more livestock next year..

Malin View Farm

(Sorry we are fully booked for 2011)We, eamonn, toni and erin (our 4 year old) have a few acres in north Donegal between Malin and Culdaff,on a hill with beautiful views overlooking the bay in Malin. Over the years we have been working on our veg garden, potato plot, fruit garden and are developing an ochard. We have chickens, ducks, geese and somtimes pigs. The tasks are varied, feeding the animals, cleaning out pens, digging, weeding, planting, chopping firewood, fencing, collecting seaweed to name but a few. Tasks for this summer are to build a new chicken run, develop a new fruit and flower, prepare ground for new hedges. Accommodation is in a self contained apartment behind the main house. This has a living/bedroom, loft bedroom and shower room. Meals, we share together in main house, food is mostly home cooked and I bake all our own breads. Beaches are two miles away. Inishowen is beautiful place to explore, for those who wish to hike or cycle. We are easy going and as long as you are willing to work hard then previous farm experience is not necessary.

We farm 150 acres one mile from the village off St.Johnston and eight miles from the historic city of Derry/Londonderry. Our farm has pigs, cattle, and vegetables and our aim is to sell all our produce through a farm shop. Accommodation is a loft conversion with internet access, but if you prefere to stay in the house with three noisy children thats ok. Tasks would be feeding the pigs, weeding, log splitting if your strong enough and general chores around the farm. Come and enjoy!
